What is the best way to heat your home in the winter? keep the thermostat 68? or change it when not home to 60?

is it best to use your thermostat at one setting always or change it up and down as you are in and out? What is the best way to heat your home in the winter? keep the thermostat 68? or change it when not home to 60?That depends on your resources.

I personally prefer wood heat; but then, electric heat is much more efficient.

If you're looking to save some $$ however, you should be asking what's the best way to reduce heating costs in winter.

In that case, I recommend Passive Solar Heating.

We make Passive Solar Heaters using plywood, black spray paint, a sheet of plexiglass, some glue, screws, and empty aluminum soda cans. These heaters work excellent for heating rooms of any size - as long as they are mounted in a spot of good, direct sunlight exposure or in any South-Facing window.

On some models, we even place a mini 12volt whisper fan to draw the air out the hole at the top of the panel. (These fans only draw 0.11 amps and are extremely energy efficient)

These heaters can reach temps well over 100 degrees F, in the winter.

We have free plans for D-I-Y on our myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/trinityenergies

They include a step by step construction process with photo-examples of a model we built.

If you are out most of the day, lowering your thermostat 4-6 degrees will save greatly on your heat bill. If you are in and out all day, it will not pay to setback your temperature. You will be constantly adjusting your thermostat and actually making your furnace work harder. What is the best way to heat your home in the winter? keep the thermostat 68? or change it when not home to 60?Try to utilize a programmable thermostat if you are on a regular schedule. Lower the temp no more than 5 deg.when you are away for 4 or more hours at a time.Lowering it more than that will only make your furnace work harder to reach the higher temp.as everything in your house has to be reheated. Avoid lowering for less than 4 hrs.But if you are away for say a weekend, you can lower it to 60 deg. for that period. What is the best way to heat your home in the winter? keep the thermostat 68? or change it when not home to 60?in all my yrs as a building maint man we have tried every thing
