You do not need to drain the tank as the heater and it's thermostat is fitted in the top of the tank. Unscrew the very large nut and withdraw the stat dead straight. Replace in the opposite way. Make sure that the fibre or rubber washer under the big nut is OK before refitting. Best to replace it anyway. It might come with the new stat. Sometimes you can change the stat only just by pulling it out straight as it is in a sheath. How do i drain my hot water tank so i can change the thermostat?just swich of water at mane sorce and run tapsHow do i drain my hot water tank so i can change the thermostat?Turn the supply to the tank off turn the hot water tap on it will drain enough to be able to change thermostat. How do i drain my hot water tank so i can change the thermostat?Just turn your water off at the mains and open your taps till the water stops coming out.How do i drain my hot water tank so i can change the thermostat? Most hot water tanks have a valve at the bottom that looks like an outdoor hose valve. DO make sure the power's off first, though! How do i drain my hot water tank so i can change the thermostat? If you are only changing the thermostat inside the immersion heater, There is no need to drain the hot water tank. You switch of the electric supply to the immersion, and remove the top plastic cover. Undo the wiring to the thermostat and withdraw the old one. Place the new thermostat in its place, re connect the wiring and replace the plastic cover and switch on.How do i drain my hot water tank so i can change the thermostat?Hi. If your question is referring to the immersion heater you will need to turn off the cold water supply to the cold water cistern that fills the domestic hot water cylinder. Turn on the hot taps in the bathroom and the kitchen. After 5 minutes they will stop. This means that the water in the tank has emptied and the water level is now at the top of the cylinder. (Dont forget your cold water is still turned off). Carefully undo the 1%26quot; union on top of the cylinder (commonly known as the draw off), water will spill slightly so have an old towel to hand. Insert a small tube or hose (about 2 foot long and suck the water out like a syphon into a bowl). This will drop the level of water in the cylinder to lower than the immersion heater connection. Next, isolate the electrical supply to the immersion heater either at the fused spur or at the electrical consumer unit. After positively proving electrical isolation, remove cable connections from underneath cover. Using an immersion heater spanner, carefully unscrew the old immersion from the cylinder. Extra care required as this can be tight and you risk creasing the side of the cylinder. This would then mean a replacement cylinder. Clean threads in cylinder and face of connection with wire wool or a knife to remove any stuck parts of the old washer. Insert new immersion heater complete with washer in reverse order. Tighten using immersion spanner, retighten 1%26quot; draw off union on top of cylinder from where you sucked out the water. Turn cold water on to storage tank and you will hear the tank and cylinder filling up. When water comes out of the hot taps that are still open then you will have filled the cylinder and removed any air locks. Close hot taps and check immersion heater connection. With the new washer and tight connection observe for any water, if dry well done, if wet, the immersion heater will need to be tightened more. Rewire cable to new heater and turn on at fused spur. Total time approx 1 hour.

If your question refers to a cylinder thermostat, no water will need to be removed as the thermostat is strapped to the side of the cylinder about one third up the height of the tank. Contact an electrician or Corgi engineer if you feel uncomfortble in changing the thermostat. You will need to isolate the electrics to the central heating system.

If you have a 'tap stat' then you will need to partially drain down your central heating system, contact a local Corgi engineer if you feel uncomfortable carrying out this repair.
