AC added? Very different thermostats for each application, with the gas and oil furnaces being the simplest. Thermostats for these can be bought at the big box stores (Home Depot, etc). If it is a heat pump, the wiring is much more complex and I would suggest you contact a dealer/installer because you likely won't be able to buy at a retail outlet, and if you did manage to get one, the wiring can be very tricky.
As far as password protection, I would think somebody makes one but haven't actually seen one. You can set all the temps you want at different times and also set it to auto changeover for heating and cooling. Then it enables you to partially lockout the screen or fully lock it out, but have never seen a password one, except on computer controlled zone systems like wattmasters.
