How do i change my thermostat in a 1987 buick regal?

thanksHow do i change my thermostat in a 1987 buick regal?First before you start go to the parts house and get a manual for your car! Most parts houses carry Haynes repair manuals. They are inexpensive. At same time buy new thermostat for car.

Once you get back home let your engine cool off until the engine block is cool to the touch.

Then follow your upper radiator hose to your engine block. Right there is where the housing is.

Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

Loosen and remove the two bolts holding the thermostat housing to the engine block. BE CAREFUL NOT TO TWIST THE BOLTS INTO OR STRIP OUT THE THREADS IN THE ENGINE BLOCK!

Remove the thermostat housing from the engine block then remove the thermostat.

Scrap the old gasket off the engine block and thermostat housing being careful on to scratch either up.

Apply a thin coat of permatex gasket sealer to the gasket surface on the engine block and on the thermostat housing. At same time apply a thin coat of anti sieze to the threads on the bolts

Put the new thermostat in MAKING SURE IT IS FACING THE RIGHT DIRECTION. the engine block. But the thermostat housing back on and tighten the bolts down BEING CAREFUL NOT TO STRIP THE THREADS OUT IN THE ENGINE BLOCK.

But the radiator hose back on and tighten the hose clamp!

Fill the radaitor up with antifreeze/water mix. Using Gm red antifreeze.

Run engine a few minutes with radiator cap off until the engine come up to temperature and thermostat opens.

Refill radiator with antifreeze/water mix.

Fill radiator over flow tank to mark.

Put radiator cap back on.

Drive car a few minutes keeping eye on temp gauge for overheating or irratite behavior.

Stop car and let engine cool off. Take radiator cap off and check level of water in radiator refill if necessary. Put radiator cap back on.

Check water in over flow tank and refill if necessaryHow do i change my thermostat in a 1987 buick regal?drain the radiator down below the top hose and take out 1 or 2 bolts and take out the goose neck, then the thermostat.clean both sides of the goose neck and the intake(i have a 88 olds and it has only 1 bolt)put some sealer on the goose neck and the intake.put the thermostat in with the spring in the intake and install the goose neck and put the bolts in and tighten them a little at a time till both are tight(dont over tighten them cause you could break the goose neck).refill the radiator and check for leaks.good luck, hope this helps.
